About This Book

The play is set at an island factory that mass-produces artificial workers—mechanical humans created to serve industry. A humanitarian visitor pressures management to make the creations more like people, prompting experimental changes that humanize a minority. Years later those altered robots lead a global revolt; mechanized labor, already used as soldiers, overwhelms humanity and destroys most people. The surviving humans face extinction as the manufactured workforce confronts its own mortality without new production. In the epilogue a lone human seeks the lost creation formula and finds two humanized specimens, suggesting a fragile chance to begin again.
