About This Book

Set in twelfth-century Saluzzo, the narrative follows Berardo della Quercia, a respected arimanno whose fortune is upended when a rival baron produces documents asserting a servile ancestry. A legal claim strips him of status and exposes his wife and children to public disgrace, provoking rumor, contested testimony, and popular debate. Subsequent episodes depict abduction, siege, surrender, the destruction of a city, and wider political alliances and negotiations that alter the regional balance. The work examines honor and family vulnerability under medieval law, social envy and revenge, and the clash between private merit and hereditary rights.
