About This Book
A simple mountain boy who struggles with book learning finds work at a remote hospice and keeps a devoted Alpine mastiff; the pair accompany the hospice patrols through treacherous snow passes. Food shortages and local pressure lead to the dog's exile, but when an avalanche buries a traveler the animal detects the victim and proves its value, setting the pattern for organized mountain rescues. The story follows the boy's growing self-worth, the development of the human–dog bond, the hazards of high-country weather, and the practical measures the community adopts to save lives in winter storms.
