About This Book
A fairy tale follows a strangely ugly young prince born with a small tuft of hair who receives from a fairy great wit and the power to bestow intelligence on the person he loves. A neighboring queen bears two daughters, one extraordinarily beautiful but foolish and the other plain but clever. The prince offers the beautiful daughter intelligence if she will promise to marry him; on accepting she gains quick wit, draws many suitors, and faces difficulty choosing. The tale examines exchanges between beauty and intellect, social response to outward appearance, and how reciprocal gifts alter relationships and fortunes.
