About This Book
A young schoolgirl leaves boarding school and travels by a new narrow-gauge line into rugged bush country, where she re-enters family and community life. The plot alternates between schoolroom and domestic comedy and a sequence of rural episodes: kitchen mysteries and social parties, plans and local enterprises, rescuing stranded wayfarers, and forming friendships. Practical problems—ranging from livestock disputes to business arrangements—test characters’ resourcefulness, and a major natural crisis forces the community to rally. Through these events the protagonist matures, helps restore order, and deepens her attachments to the place and people around her.
