Der vorliegende Text wurde anhand der 1895 erschienenen Buchausgabe so weit wie möglich originalgetreu wiedergegeben. Typographische Fehler wurden stillschweigend korrigiert. Ungewöhnliche und altertümliche Schreibweisen bleiben gegenüber dem Original unverändert; fremdsprachliche Zitate wurden nicht korrigiert.

Einige Abbildungen wurden zwischen die Absätze verschoben und zum Teil sinngemäß gruppiert, um den Textfluss nicht zu beeinträchtigen.

Das Original wurde in Frakturschrift gesetzt. Passagen in Antiquaschrift werden im vorliegenden Text kursiv dargestellt.
