About This Book
A series of travel letters recounts a loosely planned journey across South America, blending ocean crossings, island visits, Andean crossings, and inland explorations. The narrator records port cities, coastal islands, Brazilian carnival life, Argentine pampas and wine districts, and the Cordillera's mountain vistas. Detailed episodes describe Chilean towns and Mapuche communities, the nitrate industry, Bolivian highland centers and tropical lowland routes linking La Paz, Sorata, Mapiri and Guanay. Peruvian rail travel, the Titicaca basin, Panama, Caribbean stops and a return via North American cities provide contrasts of urban life and colonial architecture. Observations combine ethnographic sketches, practical travel notes, natural descriptions and photographic impressions in an informal, impressionistic tone.
