About This Book

The author records a fortnight in postwar Russia, chiefly Petersburg and Moscow, combining travel impressions, political analysis, and encounters with leading figures. He describes urban collapse and scarcity, the remnants of imperial administration, and daily life under rationing; examines Bolshevik organization, ideology, and leadership, including a lengthy conversation with Lenin; surveys cultural life and revolutionary conferences; and considers the Communist Party's achievements and limitations in restoring order and pursuing revolutionary aims amid economic disintegration.
