About This Book

The narrative follows a young Home Guard and his comrades as conscription enforcement upends their settlement, forcing reluctant men to report to a drilling camp and exposing local tensions. Episodes include clandestine signal-fires, raids by armed bands, thefts of livestock and cotton, a failed escape, and an abrupt arrest that sends some characters to a county jail and a harsh prison pen under a strict guard line. A resourceful seaman-turned-trader plays a central role in several rescues and schemes, and plans and counterplans among neighbors, informers, and soldiers drive the plot toward a resolution balancing risk, loyalty, and practical commerce.
