Der „Idiot“ ist als das zweite der fünf großen Roman-Epen, die Dostojewski geschrieben hat, im Jahre 1868 vollendet worden. Das Werk steht damit in der zeitlichen Folge in Abständen von je etwa zwei Jahren zwischen „Rodion Raskolnikoff“ und den „Dämonen“.

Zu der doppelten Schreibweise der in dem Werk vorkommenden Namen Ganjä, beziehungsweise Ganjka und Warjä, beziehungsweise Warjka sei bemerkt, daß die erweiterte Form Ganjka und Warjka wie Alexaschka und Ssenjka etwas burschikos Herabsetzendes hat.
