About This Book

This study surveys the origin, architecture, and historical development of medieval cathedrals and abbeys in Scotland, tracing the transformation of the native Celtic church under internal decay and growing continental influence, and examining the impact of royal and monastic reforms. It describes building plans, stylistic features, monastic orders, and liturgical practices, and connects architectural change with broader political and ecclesiastical shifts culminating in the Reformation. The author blends archaeological detail, documentary history, and critical interpretation to show how secular encroachment and external church pressure reshaped religious institutions and their surviving structures.
