About This Book
This volume gathers political and economic essays and a brief account of the author’s public activity from the mid nineteenth century onward, presenting reactions to the Crimean crisis, objections to diplomatic alliances perceived as reinforcing conservative empires, and advocacy for supporting emergent national movements. It criticizes contemporary statesmanship and compromises with monarchic diplomacy, describes attempts to prepare and organize uprisings and national committees, and records exile, trials, and collaboration with fellow activists. Throughout, it argues for national unity founded on a moral fusion of spiritual faith and popular sovereignty and for persistent popular education and action as the path to political emancipation.
