Action-driven chapters alternate with character sketches, and recurring themes include risk, loyalty, the lure of sudden fortune, and the practical details of life and work at sea.
The one footnote has been moved to the end of its chapter and relabeled.
Punctuation has been made consistent.
Variations in spelling and hyphenation were retained as they appear in the original publication, except that obvious typographical errors have been corrected.
