Servants of the Guns
About This Book
This work collects first-person sketches and episodes from an artillery battery during the First World War, tracing daily routines, technical practice, and soldiers' lives from training and bivouac through observation-post duty, barrages, and close-range bombardment. It balances practical descriptions of guns, tactics, and battery organization with human detail: the fatigue and humour of officers and men, relations with local civilians, the mechanics of signalling and shooting, and the strain of repeated moves and engagements. Later sections record encounters behind enemy lines and experiences as a prisoner, offering varied perspectives on combat, camaraderie, and endurance.
