Shenac's Work at Home
About This Book
The narrative follows Scottish Highlanders who emigrate to Canada, clearing land, keeping Gaelic, and building new communities. It sketches two neighboring farming families descended from two brothers: their sons, nicknamed fair and dark, contrast in temperament and fortune. One cousin prospers through careful management; the other falls into debt after misfortunes and the departure of his eldest son to seek gold in the West. Emigration, language loss, religious continuity, neighborly aid, and tensions over money and migration shape domestic life and decisions as settlers struggle to make homes in a new wilderness.
