About This Book
After the baronet's death the household confronts secrets from the past when the widow receives a letter from a former lover and an advertisement about a child placed in another's care, forcing her to honor a broken promise. The plot follows shifting alliances and courtships among relatives and visitors, including Captain Everard, Guy, Mrs. Weymore, and Colonel Jocelyn, and moves through society gatherings, a disrupted marriage, years of separation, travel abroad, and returns home, as concealed parentage, misunderstandings, and obligations alter loyalties and fortunes until private matters are settled.
