About This Book

The author recounts his participation in the Russian revolutionary movement, his arrest and successive terms of imprisonment and administrative exile in Siberia, and the daily hardships, brutality, and bureaucratic cruelty experienced by political prisoners. Interwoven are sketches of fellow exiles, prison routines, escapes, and the social and ideological debates that animated underground activity, plus reflections on the movement's development from peaceful propaganda to violent tactics in reaction to state repression. The narrative combines personal memoir, eyewitness reportage of Siberian penal camps, and contextual history of revolutionary ideas and government measures that shaped life under exile.
