About This Book

A technical account describes a proposed mechanical calculating machine and explains its components, functions, and modes of operation. It shows how numbers are represented and manipulated by wheels, pinions, and carrying mechanisms, how basic arithmetic and more complex operations such as extraction of roots and powers can be performed, and how sequences of instructions encoded on punched cards enable automated, multi-step computation and printed output. The essay contrasts this design with earlier calculating devices, sketches detailed mechanisms for stepping and carrying, and illustrates how the machine could generate tables and execute programmed procedures, with additional explanatory notes supplied by the translator.
