About This Book
A spirited boys' adventure centers on Harold Snap Hales, a schoolboy whose dismissal from term propels him from his country home into wider ventures. Under the care of Admiral Winthrop and Mrs. Winthrop he departs from Liverpool, encounters a violent madman and gamblers, works cattle, wrestles with wilderness hazards including bears and a brulé, helps found a settlement called Bull Pine on a remote mountain, and faces perilous climbs and moral tests. The narrative interleaves sporting and domestic episodes, legal matters such as a will, and culminates in Snap's self-sacrificial act and the revelation of his past.
