About This Book

An American veteran recounts enlisting in the Foreign Legion and the harsh training that prepared a multinational battalion for frontline service. He describes trench warfare, specific attacks and outpost routines, hospital evacuation and recovery, and the daily hardships that fostered comradeship among soldiers of varied origins. Interwoven are unit histories, portraits of foreign volunteers, observations of invaded regions, and reflections on love, democracy, autocracy, and wartime crimes. The account combines firsthand narrative and commentary to honor those who volunteered out of conviction.
