About This Book

An instructional handbook and classroom anthology that pairs practical essays on the art and pedagogy of oral storytelling with a large selection of short tales tested with children. Opening chapters outline kinds of stories, principles of telling, selecting and preparing material, delivery techniques, and the child’s participatory role. The anthology supplies over seventy concise pieces—folk and fairy tales, adaptations, original brief narratives, and very short prompts—designed to be easily told in school to develop imagination, feeling, taste, language, and nascent literary creativity. Emphasis is practical: classroom-tested stories and methods that position storytelling as an educational tool rather than mere entertainment.

PREFACE

All the stories in this book have been tested with children. Favorites easily available in other collections have been omitted.

The seventy-five or more very short stories, intended to help young children to express their observations, experiences, and fancies, have been included at the request of many teachers.

The writer hopes that by providing the busy teacher with “tellable” stories, she may help to win for story-telling the dignity of established scholastic place.
