About This Book

A regional study documents the distribution and habitat associations of the meadow mouse in Wyoming and Colorado, emphasizing occupation of moist mountain grasslands separated by xeric or rocky barriers. The author analyzes more than 1,100 specimens collected over several field seasons, employing 27 measurements and fifteen key external and cranial characters with statistical comparison of local series. Results highlight irregular population fluctuations and partly isolated local populations that exhibit modest subspecific differentiation likely influenced by selection and genetic drift. Taxonomic conclusions adjust previously assigned ranges, recognize local variants, and describe two additional subspecies.
