The narrative assembles satirical vignettes that treat a recurring motto—search for the woman—as the ready explanation for men's scandals, duels, financial ruin, and criminality, showing how investigators and society trace hidden motives to a female figure. It then shifts to an extended meditation on a lyrical poet whose voluntary poverty and eccentric life resist such facile attribution. Through observational sketches and psychological reflections the work examines hypocrisy, gendered blame, artistic solitude, and the gap between public appearances and concealed passions in urban social life.
