About This Book

A collection of accessible prose retellings presents many of Shakespeare’s plays for young readers, simplifying plot and language while preserving his phrasing where possible. Tragedies are often rewritten into continuous narrative using passages from the originals, whereas comedies retain more of the dramatic speech; occasional dialogue markers are used to introduce scenes. Prefatory remarks explain the educational aim to introduce children, especially girls, to the plays, to foster imagination and moral sensibility, and to prepare readers to appreciate the original dramas later in life.
