Task of Kayin

An extraterrestrial fugitive from a dead, sterile world arrives on Earth and navigates crowded streets while confronting loneliness and human indifference. He must obtain food and shelter, learn language and customs, and adapt his thinking to fit unfamiliar social norms. Encounters range from rough hostility to unexpected kindness that provides sustenance and temporary lodging, and he slowly acquires speech and the ability to read faces. The story follows his practical efforts to blend in, the daily challenges of different physiology and needs, and the ongoing psychological strain of seeking safety and belonging in an alien society.
