About This Book

This work surveys the participation of Jewish citizens in the nation’s public life from the colonial period through the nineteenth century, arguing their sustained patriotism and civic contributions. It combines narrative sketches, documentary correspondence, and thematic essays with extensive rosters, unit lists, and honors to document military service in multiple conflicts and in regular services. Additional chapters examine communal leadership in civil society, patterns of migration and refugee relief, and abuses suffered abroad. Appendices and statistical summaries, together with addenda and an index, are provided to support the compilation’s evidentiary aims.
