The Anglers of Arz

The story follows the Marco Four crew who observe pink, bipedal natives who repeatedly fish from a remote islet and are killed each dawn by predators. A linguist crewman becomes obsessed with a vanished advanced city glimpsed from orbit, while the expedition commander insists on restraining interference under colonial regulations. A watchman notices puzzling inconsistencies — the natives do not swim and no boats or landings are found — and secretly ventures out at night to discover how the island visits are arranged. The narrative blends speculative danger, anthropological mystery, and dilemmas about curiosity versus noninterference with an alien culture.
