A surveying party camped near a great river is shaken by mysterious warnings delivered on arrows and bark, written in English and meant to repel them. A persuasive prophetic leader stages conjurations and threats to protect his community, prompting scouts, a veteran hunter-guide, soldiers, and two young chain-bearer cousins to pursue answers. The plot follows their reconnaissance and skirmishes, council deliberations, and exploration of hidden caverns, where personal memories, negotiations, and surprising revelations converge to bring the tense search and conflicts to a decisive resolution.
