The Arctic legions

A tense short story follows Corporal Conroy, a mounted policeman, and Yeyik, a half‑breed hunter and killer, who become locked in a desperate contest on a rocky outcrop while vast herds of migrating caribou surge below. Competing for a revolver and for survival, they exchange taunts, cunning maneuvers, and sudden violence as the unceasing tide of hooves turns the landscape into a lethal, indifferent force. The narrative alternates close physical action with stark natural description, probing themes of obsession, survival, and the collapse of civilized restraint under extreme isolation.
