Sorted lists and tables: irregularities in the sorting order have not corrected.
Differences in wording between the Table of Contents and the section headings in the text, and between the List of Illustrations and the illustration captions, have not been standardised.
Depending on the hard- and software used to read this text and their settings, not all elements may display as intended.

Changes made:
Tables and illustrations were moved out of text paragraphs. Footnotes have been moved to underneath paragraph(s) where they are referenced. Some illustrations have been rotated.
The table on pages 268-270 and the associated footnotes have been recombined into a single table and list of footnotes.
Minor obvious typographical and punctuation errors were corrected silently.
