About This Book

A series of linked essays and humorous sketches recounts the everyday trials of running a household, from servants and tradespeople to social entertainments, family obligations, and domestic logistics. The narrator reflects on the management of cooks, maids, butlers, and tradesmen, the challenges of shopping, hosting, childrearing, holidays, moving house, and travel, combining practical observation with wry social commentary. Each chapter focuses on a specific role or episode, blending anecdote, instruction, and satire to reveal the interplay between personal independence and domestic duty.
