The Builders

Two Research Builders from New City scour ruined metropolises for salvaged plans and diagrams, driven by a civic ideology that building is the only meaningful purpose. Memory of the vanished past is scarce and earlier reckless constructions make them meticulously cautious as sources of new plans grow scarce. Their systematic exploration of lower levels yields a near-miraculous discovery of intact books and blueprints, which they reconstruct into a machine whose behavior surprises them by escaping control. The narrative examines technical obsession, cultural amnesia, and the unforeseen consequences of resurrecting lost engineering.
