A chronological military narrative of operations in Russian Poland during the opening phase of the war, examining the capture of Lemberg, Austrian reverses and German counter-movements, Russian advances and their setbacks in East Prussia, defensive efforts along the Vistula, the siege of Przemysl, frontline anecdotes, and the subsequent German retreat and Russian pursuit. The account analyses commanders, fortress systems, terrain, strategic movements, and the difficulties of wartime reporting under strict censorship.
The one footnote has been moved to the end of its chapter.
Punctuation has been made consistent.
Variations in spelling and hyphenation were retained as they appear in the original publication, except that obvious typographical errors have been corrected.
