About This Book

A series of comic short stories set around a suburban golf club, told largely through the reminiscences of an elderly clubman who frames each episode. Incidents on the links produce romantic entanglements, social rivalries, and farcical misunderstandings as bungled shots, eccentric personalities, and petty pride lead to humorous consequences. Scenes range from competitive one-upmanship and courting mishaps to improbable rescues and verbal sparring, all presented with light satire of local manners and a playful, observational tone that treats golf as both pastime and comic catalyst.

The editor pressed a bell, a single ruby set in a fold of the tapestry upon the wall. The major-domo appeared.

"Give this man a purse of gold," said the editor, "and throw him out."
