The Contact Point

A human exploration team discovers a ruined Martian city and encounters a small group of native beings, one of whom forms an uneasy rapport with the expedition’s officers and a shy linguist. Attempts to build a Rosetta Stone-style communication lead to partial understanding, but the aliens consistently refuse or cannot explain the history of their settlement. Geological and structural observations suggest decay and obsolescence rather than catastrophic destruction, yet unexplained absences among the natives and the limits of translation create mounting uncertainty about trust, motive, and what contact between the two species will ultimately mean.
