About This Book

The volume offers a verse-by-verse scholarly commentary on two short New Testament letters, arguing for the authenticity and traditional authorship of James while examining its address to Jewish Christians, its ethical teaching on faith and works, patience, the tongue, riches and humility, and its relationship to Pauline and Jewish wisdom literature. It treats practical pastoral matters such as the elders' role, anointing the sick, confession, and converting sinners. On the shorter letter it analyzes authorship, purpose, warnings against false teachers, use of apocryphal sources like the Book of Enoch, and its connections with 2 Peter. The commentary combines textual criticism, theological reflection, and moral application.

THE PASTORAL EPISTLES.

By the Rev. ALFRED PLUMMER, D.D.,

Master of University College, Durham.

"Dr. Plummer's name is a guarantee for sensible, scholarly work, and his 'Pastoral Epistles' quite maintains its reputation.... It is an admirable example of what popular theology ought to be—presuming a somewhat high level of education and interest in its readers, and built throughout upon sound erudition and sensible, devout, and well-disciplined reflection."—Saturday Review.

"After a short statement of the grounds for believing in the Pauline authorship of these Epistles, the writer takes some of the chief paragraphs of the text, explains their meaning, draws out their historical significance, and concludes with a practical application to modern times of the truths contained in the paragraph. The treatment is throughout scholarlike, lucid, thoughtful."—Guardian.

"The value of the expositions in themselves is much enhanced by the mode in which they are brought to bear on beliefs and practices of the present age."—Literary Churchman.

"Full of life and vigour.... No difficulty in the Epistles is evaded, rather are troublesome passages attacked with keener relish. Dr. Plummer has spared no pains on his task, and has produced what is practically the best commentary we have on these important Epistles."—British Weekly.

"This volume preserves the reputation of its predecessors for being of high artistic merit, in the vividness with which it clothes doctrines and precepts, existing in abstract forms in the Epistles, with the concrete realities of daily needs, brings them to change the metaphor into full harmony with the symphonies of a holy life."—Rock.

"The introductory chapter on the character and genuineness of the Pastoral Epistles' is most masterly and conclusive.... The exposition is marked by sound and painstaking scholarship, sympathetic insight into and careful analysis of the Apostle's thought."—Nonconformist.

"The author of this work is already well known by his excellent volumes on the Gospel and the Epistles of St. John. Among other excellencies in the new volume we may mention the first chapter of the exposition which discusses carefully and attractively the genuineness of the Epistles annotated."—Methodist Tunes.

WORKS BY THE RIGHT REV. HANDLEY C. G. MOULE, D.D., LORD BISHOP OF DURHAM.

Twenty-first Thousand. Fcap 8vo, 2s. 6d.

OUTLINES OF CHRISTIAN DOCTRINE.

One of the Volumes of the Theological Educator.

"Mr. Moule has attempted a very difficult task, and has at least succeeded in condensing an immense mass of information into a small compass. It is perhaps superfluous to say that his work is characterised by great reverence from the first page to the last. At every point the reader feels that he is reading a statement of a theology which is the life of the writer. In the more strictly theological part the summary is, as a rule, arranged and expressed excellently."—Guardian.

DR. MOULE'S COMMENTARIES ON ST. PAUL'S EPISTLES.

Crown 8vo, cloth, 7s. 6d.

The Epistle to the Romans.

In the Expositor's Bible.

"We do not hesitate to place it in the very front of the little group of volumes which are the best examples of this carefully edited work. It would be pleasant to linger upon this commentary, upon the clearness with which the great evangelical doctrines of the Epistle are explained and enforced, upon the earnestness of its personal appeal, and the charm which often marks its language; but the judicious student of the New Testament will obtain the book for himself."—Record.

Crown 8vo, cloth, 5s.

Ephesian Studies.

Crown 8vo, cloth, 5s.

Philippian Studies.

Lessons in Faith and Love from St. Paul's Epistles to the Philippians.

"Dr. Moule carefully translates and paraphrases each section of St. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians, and draws out the permanent lessons of faith and love which it contains; he has made a wise choice of the book of the Bible on which to comment, and has treated it with wisdom and reverence.... It is a book to be pondered over in meditation, and we think that those who so use it will find themselves repaid."—Guardian.

Crown 8vo, cloth, 5s.

Colossian Studies.

Lessons in Faith and Holiness from St. Paul's Epistles to the Colossians and Philemon.

"Dr. Moule has not only given to us a faithful and scholarly translation of St. Paul's Epistles, but he has most carefully brought out the full teaching of faith and love in a series of beautiful meditations altogether devotional. This is an invaluable addition to our devotional commentaries of St. Paul's Epistles, and we trust that the learned author may be led to continue his studies yet further in this grand field of practical meditation, which not only enlightens the human mind, but must deepen and quicken the spiritual life within us. The book is a marvel of cheapness."—Church Bells.
