About This Book

The narrative traces Samuel de Champlain's life from maritime beginnings through voyages to Acadia and the St. Lawrence and the establishment of permanent settlements. It recounts harsh winters, interactions and armed encounters with Indigenous peoples, and exploratory journeys that charted rivers, bays, and inland lakes. Later chapters follow efforts to sustain and defend colonial outposts, episodes of capture and return, and his mapmaking and published accounts. Concluding material assesses his character, leadership, and the practical and intellectual legacy of his writings.
