A band of young aviators and their guardians travel into the western desert to operate experimental aeroplanes hauling valuable ore, confronting harsh alkali plains, sudden electrical storms, and hostile observers who shadow the party. The narrative follows their adjustments to frontier conditions—dust, health worries, and mechanical challenges—while interpersonal resourcefulness and technical problem‑solving are tested. Encounters with an enigmatic recluse and scheming adversaries introduce mystery and suspense, and episodes of sabotage, aerial contesting, and daring improvisation drive a sequence of travel adventures and danger across the arid landscape.
