A social satire about a group of acquaintances drawn into the promotion of a speculative company and the private ambitions it disturbs. A persuasive promoter courts introductions and capital while provoking distrust among established families and suitors; clubroom talk, parliamentary intrigue and flirtations complicate loyalties. The narrative traces shifting alliances, meddling interventions, and debates over a railway scheme as personal and financial reputations are tested. Tension crescendos in a tense nocturnal episode on the road and in decisive meetings that resolve both the business venture and the characters' romantic entanglements.
Throughout the dialogues, there were words used to mimic accents of the speakers. Those words were retained as-is.
Errors in punctuations and inconsistent hyphenation were not corrected unless otherwise noted.
On page 57, a period was added after "Mr".
On page 67, "Omafaga" was replaced with "Omofaga".
On page 109, "thats" was replaced with "that's".
On page 238, "wathc" was replaced with "watch".
On page 244, a single quotation mark was replaced with a double quotation mark.
