About This Book

The narrative follows a determined contractor who travels west to overcome a treacherous muskeg that halts a railway project; his daughter and her friends accompany him. Foreman Cassidy and a young worker called the Kid struggle with men, weather, and a bottomless swamp while tensions rise in the camp. Discovery of copper and gold prospects draws miners, rival claimants, and schemes, and episodes range from camp life and mine exploration to fires, breaches of trust, and hard choices. Through action and setbacks the characters test loyalties, practical ingenuity, and female authority as Ida assumes leadership in the frontier community.
