The Grey Lady

The narrative follows two young kinsmen whose divergent fortunes after a naval disappointment set off a chain of adventures and reckonings. Alternating between English settings of inheritance, gambling and urban life and Mediterranean scenes in Barcelona and Majorca, it threads family pride, romantic entanglements and clandestine bargains with sea voyages, duels and violent confrontations. An aloof Spanish count and a varied social circle complicate loyalties, while episodes in editorial rooms and public arenas expose ambition and reputation, leading to revelations that test honour and finally alter relationships and prospects.
