About This Book

This practical treatise surveys horse development and types in the United States, tracing prehistoric ancestors and the influence of Arab, Barb, and other foreign stock while describing American-bred lines and major breeds. It explains breeding principles such as like begets like, addresses the rise of trotters and saddle-horses, and outlines government and farm breeding concerns. Practical guidance covers buying, stable management, riding and driving, training versus breaking, conformation and action, and mule breeding, with recurring attention to economic value and adapting equine practice to technological change.

FLORA TEMPLE

This remarkable mare was the first trotter to go a mile better than 2.20. For more than six years she was called “Queen of the Trotting Turf.” Nothing is known as to her breeding, but from 1853 to 1859 she beat all the good horses in the country. She was a light bay, 14⅛ hands in height, and weighed 835 pounds when in training.
