About This Book

The book presents the human body as a house or temple, using household metaphors to explain anatomy and physiology for young readers. Each chapter treats a system or organ — skeleton as frame, skin as walls, heart as pumping engine, lungs and heating, digestive kitchen, nerves as telephone lines, senses as windows and music room — and describes their functions and care. Practical guidance covers food, cleanliness, bathing, exercise, and the body's defenses, while warning about harmful substances such as narcotics and stimulants. Emphasis on taking responsible stewardship of the body and simple preventive practices makes the material accessible to parents teaching children.

Transcriber’s Notes

Obvious typographical errors have been silently corrected. Variations in hyphenation and spelling and punctuation remain unchanged.

Original picture captions are shown in sentence case italics, as in the original. Captions that are not in italics were added by the transcriber, generally to deal with text within the picture.

The chapters all start with illustrated capitals. Where the capital is Incorporated into the illustrated chapter heading it has been extracted by the transcriber.

Many chapter heading illustrations extend substantially down the side of the page. Most of these extensions have been curtailed or removed since consistent replication amongst various e-reader types has proved impossible.
