About This Book

Local provincial officials panic after learning that an incognito high-ranking inspector will visit to review their administration. Mistaking a passing stranger for the inspector, they launch a campaign of flattery, bribery, and cosmetic reform to hide embezzlement and incompetence. The presumed inspector takes advantage of their fears while escalating absurd attempts to impress him turn into chaotic farce and eventual exposure. The five-act comedy proceeds through mounting misunderstandings and revelations that satirize bureaucratic corruption, small-town pretensions, and human susceptibility to panic and flattery.
