About This Book

The book chronicles the later decades of a leading suffrage activist's public life, presenting speeches, personal correspondence, and campaign reports from the 1880s and 1890s. It records international travel and letters written abroad, lobbying and testimony before Congress, and detailed accounts of state campaigns in Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, and Wyoming. It traces organizational developments, including the union of suffrage associations and the convening of international councils, and describes debates over strategy and relationships with political parties and candidates. Interwoven are biographical notes on family losses, domestic life, honors received, and the long effort to compile a history of the movement.

FOOTNOTES:

[138] Superficial and inadequate grouping.

[139] In later years churches have been so freely opened for woman suffrage meetings that it would be impossible to tabulate them.

[140] In later years this attitude changed, and it would be impossible to list the instances of their helpfulness.

[141] Only a reference to principal points is possible. Its various phases are listed under their respective heads.
