About This Book

The volume chronicles the later career and personal struggles of Ludwig van Beethoven between roughly 1819 and 1824, tracing legal battles over the guardianship of his nephew, recurrent financial and domestic instability, and extensive negotiations with publishers and foreign patrons. It follows the genesis and difficult composition conditions of major works including the Mass in D (Missa Solemnis), the Diabelli Variations, the late piano sonatas, and the choral finale of the Ninth Symphony, and describes preparations for its premiere. Episodes include visits by contemporaries, commissions from Britain and America, continued use of conversation books, and recurring conflicts that strained friendships even as creative output intensified.
