About This Book

The narrative opens when a guarded husband discovers that his wife has brought a wounded young woman into their home, and that impulsive rescue draws the couple into a tightening web of theft, deception, and violence. Discoveries of a parcel, missing jewels, ambiguous letters, and conflicting testimonies escalate suspicion and prompt private and public inquiries. Mistaken identities, strategic bluffs, and sudden betrayals complicate efforts to protect reputation and life, while secrets from strangers' pasts are gradually exposed. The plot moves through suspenseful confrontations and revelations to resolve who can be trusted and how justice will be achieved.

Unfortunately the Russian—or pretended Russian—was allowed to escape in the confusion, but the police had hopes of getting upon his track. Mr. Hammersley-Fisher was seriously, but not fatally, injured. All the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Sands, with the exception of four, had left, that the house might be kept quiet for the invalid.

The four who remained were Mr. and Mrs. John Heron, Justin O'Reilly, and Justin O'Reilly's wife.
