About This Book

The book offers a concise critical survey of the Hebrew Scriptures, tracing the formation and canon, analyzing sources and authorship of the Pentateuch (including documentary strands J, E, P, D), and examining the historical books, prophetic corpus, and wisdom literature. It compares differing legal and cultic portrayals, discusses composition and editorial processes, and treats major prophetic books and the collection of the Twelve. Individual chapters evaluate law codes, ritual prescriptions, narrative development, and poetic writings such as psalms, proverbs, and lamentations, concluding with bibliographic guidance. Throughout it emphasizes literary character, editorial layering, and the religious ideas reflected in Israelite literature.
