About This Book

A veteran recounts four years of service with a Texas cavalry regiment, beginning with family background and the outbreak of hostilities and proceeding through marches, camp life, skirmishes, major engagements in the Trans-Mississippi and Western theaters, wounds and captures, sieges, raids, and the eventual surrender. The narrative combines battlefield sketches, daily hardships, illnesses, leadership losses, and personal recollections of comrades, accompanied by rosters and illustrations. Chapters are organized chronologically to trace mobilization, campaigns in Missouri and Mississippi, raids such as Holly Springs, engagements including Wilson's Creek, Pea Ridge, Iuka, and Corinth, and reflections on service and survivors.
