The narrative imagines Earth altered by a loss of causality, where most humans have become erratic Organisms adapted to a capricious landscape while a few Relicts retain fragmentary rationality. It follows Finn, one of the starving Relicts, as he watches extravagant, unpredictable beings performing inexplicable acts on a rotten plain and struggles to secure food without succumbing to poison or being devoured. Vividly rendered scenes emphasize the mismatch between habitual logic and a world that no longer obeys cause and effect, probing survival, the erosion of ordered thought, and the precarious persistence of memory and sanity amid mounting disorder.
